Just watched the entire 3 series again for the 3rd time! As a midwestern American I love seeing the English countryside and the camera work is great. It starts off as a pretty good series, then sometime around the middle or end of S2 it becomes distinctly bad, then for s3 and maybe early s4, almost too bad to watch, then it gets tolerably good again. And are you recording Shameless on Sundance at 9pm, yet? No other detectives , which is the norm for murder investigations. Real shame. Inspector Lynley should have run longer than six seasons as it really is a top drawer police drama. A brilliant production, which I marked down 1 point only because of a certain inconsistency in quality of plot. I know! Well, the BBC has a verypowerful mandate that it has to fulfill, and it’s always been, in myopinion, the bastion of good broadcasting. It’s always tried to fulfillall the various different things it has to with public broadcasting.And I think they felt that we’d being going for 7 years, 24 episodes,so it was time to put some money into something new. B&B: Yes, in the first episode, Lynley’s godson disappears.NP: Well, they thought that was too close to real life. As much as some might like to see that, it would ruin a really good friendship between unlikely people. Maybe the actress who replaced Lesley Vickerage when she left the show due to pregnancy won't grate on me so much. Totally inaccurate. A good watch, but don't worry about reading the stories. Anything. Sometimes we would have a whole host of them,we’d have four or five, and that was great fun. I wish I had my kids with me,they could tell me. B&B: Did you grow up like Lynley?NP: No, not at all. Filmsare fabulous. She has very real problems in addition to working with her ponce of a boss. I sometimes wonder about theater if you get comparedtoo often to other people who’ve done those parts. It was "daytime detective" type stuff and I have a soft spot for Sharon Small but she was just not doing it for me. Anything Jim McGovern does is really the bee’s knees for me. I had a lovely time with that. I have now rewatched several of these, and have refined my appreciation. But then you have a film like Stardust,which is fantastic! That’s oneof my favorite sports. Inever worked with him as an actor. I was hoping maybe they would put it out just straight to DVD somehow. B&B: The American show?NP: Yes, I love it. The dialogue in the car where Havers promised Lynley she would save his dignity by making the video of his therapy session disappear actually made me laugh out loud, and the role reversal, with Havers bossing Lynley around and Lynley having to take the flak was, I thought, superbly done. All of these series finished before their time unfortunately. Or does Inspector Lynley have two different girlfriends with the name Helen? To me, the Lynley series, both the novels and the TV shows, are the most overrated items in crime fiction. Stories were ok . Some episodes were truly stunning, and often in very atmospheric settings. The shame is that they were cancelled before being allowed to have one wrap-up episode. NP: Hopefully, it will be on DVD. Promise. Try it out. I just wonder about the relationship between Inspector Lynley, and the two Helens I have seen on screen. I love the pace thatgood television can engender, when you really get to work fast! Some of the period stuff you justhad out there like Cranford. Personally, Ididn’t quite see it, but anyway, that’s what they felt. In this episode we learn Helen has been appointed a professor at some university in London. I actually thought the script was pretty good and it was clever in that it combined the plot of the crime with some of Lynley's personal upheavals. I rememberworking with her so well. Saturday: Primeval premieres on BBC America at 9pm (expect a post on this awesome science fiction series in the future).
