I knew that going in and watching "Goin' South" that it wouldn't be anything great or special and it certainly is not one of Nicholson's better works even though he directed.
I have always loved this movie, me and my family first saw it together when I was 5 years old.
Any negative comments about this flick come from the more erudite crowd which knows or looks deeper for such things. An elderly woman offers to marry him, but dies on the spot immediately, as Moon is dragged back to the gallows, headstrong, genteel Southern virgin Julia Tate (introducing Golden Globe nominated Mary Steenburgen) agrees to marry and take charge of him. Goin' South is the most flat-footed comedy to collapse on the screen since Nickelodeon. They must deal with his old gang, the sheriff, the bank - and each other.

Just when 'Goin' South' needs to build, the pace gets poky and the wit becomes mere whimsy. I think the only reason John Belushi is in the movie is because Nicholson wanted to meet him. . Her name is Julia Tate(Mary Steenburgen)who's headstrong and smart yet her character is very sheltered and plain as a Southern virgin. Not a classic, but I've been repeating its lines for 25 years .
Filmed cheaply with a local crew down in Mexico, the film wasn't received well upon release. Co-starring with Nicholson is Mary Steenburgen and Christopher Lloyd. I think the only reason John Belushi is in the movie is because Nicholson wanted to meet him. The movie's setting is a man who's captured for a capital offence, and just before being hanged, a woman offers her hand in marriage to save him from death. And there were and are some extremely potential situations. With Jack Nicholson, Mary Steenburgen, Christopher Lloyd, John Belushi. A waste of time. This movie is one of my all time favorites. . It gets complicated when Moon's old gang arrive at Julia's house, she is abstinent, but they introduce her to intoxicating beverages. It turns Western conventions on their heads not out of satirical anger but simply to charm the pants off the audience. Fun, but not too hard on the brain kind of thing. Going' South is directed by Jack Nicholson who also stars. With the Nicholson signature, it keeps on rolling, at least for the first hour and change before the story moves in the wrong direction.
