If only such a complex, dark, thought provoking, challenging, bold version was what we got in the end, would’ve it have made American Sniper and its subject one of the most thought provoking piece of cinema on the effects of war on a human being. I made the mistake of saying on Facebook after seeing Whiplash that I hadn’t seen American Sniper yet, but if were half intense as it (Whiplash)… and a former Navy friend of mine who’s made several tours jumped all over the sentiment WITHOUT HAVING SEEN EITHER OF THE TWO FILMS. I have to say that to this day, I don’t like True Detective, whether in script or TV forma. And get this: He often doesn’t even scout his own locations anymore! My comment was about why audiences may be rejecting certain types of war movies while embracing others (read it again). Was it good? I don’t normally go into things about religion or politica, but I do find it disturbing the trend toward the love for violence.
The plot feels unoriginal and the mythology rehashed. Well, here’s the good news. This amount is subject to change until you make payment. But to attribute the movie’s artistic success to it’s direction alone, especially when the director is one of four writers who is bringing his own story to the screen is ridiculous. Jason Statham circa Snatch, before he became a joke, might have been OK, provided he could do a Boston accent. This was another “true life” story and attached was A-lister Mark Wahlberg. Again, look at the trailer — what does it do? Women go to movie theaters. And those three scripts, all of which, btw, you dismissed, have character and writer’s voice, big time.
The part about Kyle’s inability to cope with being a “legend” is almost laughable and completely fabricated in this movie by a conservative director trying desperately to manufacture an American hero for his red meat eating ilk.

Maybe we can submit a movie in our defense. at some point. I thinkj he did what he could with the material he was given. One man’s hero is another man’s war criminal. I don’t try to be overdramatic about it, but I do feel that it’s a point that needs to be made, even if it’s a short sentence without dialogue. Now, whether or not it’s like that in the movie doesn’t matter, because that is what the marketers put together and that was a genius move! Like Kyle, Routh was a complex haunted character, not just a creepy psycho.
Rest in piece good Cinema. If they made a movie of his book about Tillman I would probably see it. Great for HBO and everyone involved. I’m there. It was a faithful enactment of his own script. As a Navy Seal you are NEVER supposed to seek fame and fortune, yet he WROTE a BOOK about his exploits (many of which have been debunked btw) and BRAGGED that he loved to kill!! LIONS FOR LAMBS, STOP LOSS, RENDITION, THE GREEN ZONE, REDACTED, GRACE IS GONE, BODY OF LIES, IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH, the list goes on — audiences stayed away from them in droves.
That just seems wrong for everyone to have flooded the gates to see a movie about the most successful in kills sniper in American history (whatever that actually means). He is such a great writer, I’ve read Into The Wild which was just phenomenal, and Under the Banner of Heaven which was plain freaky and great as well. I hate to imagine that I was drawn in by the effective marketing, but maybe I was. And those fucking movies are endless. I’m much more interested in heroes who are bright but ordinary — and therefore overmatched, like Hitchcock’s heroes.
Still and all, I respect its power, and I’m open to the possibility that Season 2 may blow my mind, even if most of Season 1 was a chore to get through. Yes that’s the one, I think that the story itself was more intriguing than the overall doco and would suit a feature film format with a grander scope . Well, I am not actually embarrassed, I just feel a bit bad now that I saw it and supported it with my dollar. Technically, Eastwood has always been a workmanlike director but like a lot of artists, and he certainly qualifies by now, he sort of manages to turn his limitations into virtues. And I will tell this board when you welsh on your bet. This time in 2013, Lone Survivor came out. And he’s five years older than Clint! I thought it lacked a deeper emotional connection.
But I’m curious to hear your thoughts about the cadets who attend West Point, Annapolis and the Air Force Academy. And the character work, at least in the draft I read, was minimal. That’s content which is the realm of writing, the script. Unbelievable. Brilliant actors doing some of the best work of their careers. In fact, it ballooned to over 160 pages, which pushed the budget up. And I realized that this is a world that I just don’t understand.

As for “impunity and failure”, the film is about an individual not a conflict; it’s “American Sniper” not “Sniper in Iraq”. Otherwise, wouldn’t LONE SURVIVOR had made that much money. I’m just as amazed as you are Carson because I’m surprised that this movie drew such big amount s. But I think that the news indirectly played a big part into this film. Instead, we got an oscar-baiting cliched melodrama, that American ate it up as a complex, dark, thought provoking cinema. Another thing I liked that they did is they added a rival sniper. To not show Kyle’s death at the hand of another vet, really undermined the story for me. You have to put some effort into reading scripts, in order to get something out of them. This is very true. The official story was that he was shot by enemy forces during an ambush, but it was later revealed that he may have been killed by friendly fire, and that Army commanders and members of the Bush administration covered up the truth of what had happened.
maybe they should’ve called it AMERICAN SURVIVOR> America will pay up to watch themselves as heroes even if the country is destroying other country, indirectly or directly responsible for the death of countless women and children, on the field or via drones and what not. It is really irritating when movies do stuff like this.
