Excellent, but draining read with absolutely wonderful secondary characters added to the mix and a story I will not forget, and......oh the ending. So, Auntie/Uncle says that you respect the person as a member of an elder generation and that you love them almost as much as a member of your family.
Unlike many of the Indian novels I have read, this book focuses on the Emergency years under Indira Gandhi.
Like most Americans, I remember clearly the date September 11, 2001. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. How could I possibly protect him from such uncertainties?
It has stayed with me and I often think about this book. Kin “[find] each other’s lives inscrutable” in this rich, sharp story about the way identity is formed. My rating is based on my honest reaction to the book.
November 30th 2001 Mistry tells a story of human tragedy over and over again with language that is so well executed that you smell the smells of India and feel the mental and physical pain of his characters. Auntie/Uncle conveys respect, affection and relationship at the same time.
Set in an unidentified Indian city by the sea during the mid-1970s, Mistry’s novel is a moving tale of a lonely widow, a paying boarder, and two tailors seeking work in the city. Sad. That's how powerful it was. I am not sure I can say much that would do this book proper justice.
